Review and connect

Monthly category budgets

Set a simple target and compare it with expenses minus refunds received this month.

Updated: 10/6/2026

Set a target

  1. Select personal or household scope.
  2. Open Categories and edit an expense category.
  3. Set a monthly budget in that scope’s base currency.
  4. Open Reports and select the month to review spending, remaining amount and overspending.

Personal and household targets are separate. A copied category is independent; changing one does not change the other.

If you copy categories between ledgers with different base currencies, review and save the household budget amount in its own currency. Copying does not automatically convert the target.

Understand the calculation

Monthly net spending = expenses − merchant refunds received in that month. For a 3,000 budget, 2,400 expenses and a 200 refund, net spending is 2,200 and 800 remains. If that refund arrives next month, it affects next month instead.

Transfers, private-loan movements, voided entries, reversals and balance checks do not consume the budget. Upcoming subscription estimates are not spending; posted charges can count. Eligible personally paid household entries count in the household category you selected.

Keep it simple

A budget is a reference, not a limit on recording. Going over it does not block a transaction. This workflow does not carry unused budget forward or promise alerts. Daily, weekly and yearly budget calculations are not part of this monthly workflow.
